Ando Bokuo was born in 1627. His given name was Sadatame.
He studied Chinese classics under Tamekage Reizei and waka poetry under Katsutoshi Kinoshita.
In five years, he became its head clerk and was fater adopted into the Tsutsui family. He opened a store of toilet articles of his own and sold tooth-powder, which he manufactured after studying American brands and which became very popular. His soap and other loilet articles were also well received, making his store among the largest in the line in Japan.
