Career
He was the master of an old publishing house in Kyoto which used to publish books of the Hachimonjiya Edition since the days of his ancestors. In 1699, he published the Yakusha Kuchijami-sen, which was a new departure from the conventional dramatic criticism and gossip about popular Kabuki actors of the time. He also edited a series of books of stories dealing with the daily life of the masses which was very well received by the public. His publications were so popular that the name of his house, Hachimonjiya, became a household word. It is doubtful, however, that all the books bearing his name were actually written by him.
