1925 graduate Minsk Teachers’ Training Technicum. 1930 graduate Teachers’Training Department, Belorussian State University.
1923-1927 member, Maladnyak lit associate. From late 1937 member, Polymya lit associate. Joined Belorussian Department of Proletarian Writers.
1925-1926 simultaneously ed, Malady araty (journal of Central Committee, Belorussian Communist Youth League) and Klimovichi newspaper Nash pratsaunyk-, deputy ed, Polotsk newspaper Cliyrvonaya Polachchyna-, from 1932 deputy chairman, organisation comt for establishment of Belorussian Writers’ Union. From 1934 deputy chairman, Belorussian Writers’ Union. Foreign a time director, Institute of Language, Belorussian Academy of Sciences.
Secretary and member, editorial board, journal Bal'shavik Belarusi. Editor, journal Zaklyk; elected candidate member, Central Committee, Communist Party (Bolsheviks) Belorussian and member, Belorussian Central Executive Committee. 1921 first work published.
His verse extolled the ’’happy everyday life” of Soviet man and brought him into conflict with nationalist trends in Belorussian literature Opposed manifestations of Belorussian ’’bourgeois nationalism”. Helped prepare 1934 Belorussian orthographic reform, aimed at the rapprochement of Belorussian to Russian.
In this connection edited publications Pisatel' i yazyk (The Writer and Language), Pisateli BSSK о reforme pravopisaniya belorusskogo yazyka (Belorussian Writers on Belorussian Orthographic Reform) and the Russko-belorusskiy slovar’ (RussianBelorussian Dictionary). 1938 arrested and interned in concentration camps. Worked on construction of Noril’sk Metallurgical Combine and at lumber camps in Krasnoyarsk Kray.
1955 rehabilitated.
Correspondent member, Belorussian Academy of Sciences, from 1936. Communist Party member from 1930 and again, after rehabilitation, from 1960.
