Andreas Metaxas was born in 1790, in Argostoli, Cephalonia, Venetian Republic (now Greece).

Metaxas didn't receive any special education, other than Greek he was fluent in Italian and French and was a scholar of ancient Greek history.
During the latter part of the War of Independence (1824-1827) he accompanied Capo d'Istria to Greece, and was appointed by him minister of war. In 1831, when Capo d'Istria was murdered, Metaxas became a member of the provisional government which held office till the accession of King Otho in 1833. During the minority of Otho he was named privy councillor and minister at Madrid and Lisbon. In 1840 he was recalled and appointed minister of war. In 1843-1844 he was president of the council of ministers, -and he subsequently held the post of ambassador at Constantinople from 1850 to 1854.
Andreas Metaxas died on September 8, 1860, at Athens.
Andreas Metaxas married Marietta Vourvachi, sister of a Greek officer in the French army, Dionysios, with whom he had two sons and two daughters.
