Andrei Balanchivadze, USSR Composer.


Balanchivadze, Andrei was born on June 1, 1906 in Petersburg. Brother of George Balanchine.


Graduated from the Tbilisi Conservatory, 1927 and Leningrad Conservatory, 1931.


Musical director at several theatres in Tbilisi, 1931-1934. From the late 1930s one of the best known Georgian composers. Wrote music for many Georgian ballet productions.

From 1935 taught at the Tbilisi Conservatory. From 1942 professor at the same conservatory. Chairman, 1953, and First Secretary, 1956-1961 and 1968-1972, of the Union of Composers of the Georgian SR.
