Career
Joined the Red Army, 1918, and took part in the Civil War. Several high posts during World War II. Commander of the Voronezh Front, 1943, Commander of the 1st Guards, 1943-1945. After World War II, Commander of the Kiev military district, 1945-1953.
Commander of the Soviet Occupation Forces in Germany, 1953-1957. Commander of Ground Forces and Deputy Minister of Defence, 1957. Supreme Commander of the Warsaw Pact Forces, 1960.
Minister of Defence of the USSR, 1967-1976. Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, 1961-1976, and member of the Politburo, 1973-1976.
