In 1947, Kostrykin graduated from the secondary school in the village of Kozlovka. In 1950, he finished Tambov Artillery Technical School and Rostov Higher Engineering School in 1958. In 1971, Kostrykin received the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences. Two years later, he received the title of Professor.
Kostrykin did his service at the proving test ground in the city of Kapustin Yar. In 1963-1976, he held the position of the Head of the Department of Serpukhov Higher Command College. In 1976-1988, Andrey Ivanovich was the Head of the Central Research Institute of Space Forces Laboratory. He worked as a professor of Mashpribor Training Institute in 1988-2006.
