Admitted to practise in Scotland in 1988, he also holds the office of notary public and has led his firm's private client and charities department.
Education
Biggart studied at the University of Edinburgh, where he earned a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws. Founded in 1582, the University of Edinburgh is one of Scotland's oldest universities and a major centre of legal education. Its law teaching served Scots law, the distinct legal system of Scotland within the United Kingdom.
He was admitted to practise in Scotland in 1988, and his legal career subsequently developed in Glasgow.
Career
Andrew Biggart built his legal career in Glasgow, where he became a partner at Maclay Murray & Spens. The firm was founded in Glasgow in 1871 by David Maclay, David Murray and John Spens as the first law firm in Scotland with a specifically commercial practice. It grew into one of the country's leading full-service firms, with offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London.
Biggart worked within the firm's private client and charities department, which advises clients on trusts and estates, wills and tax planning. A Law Gazette report identified him as head of that department, which then had about thirty lawyers. The firm's private client and charities team was also accredited by the STEP Employer Training Scheme at its highest level, and Biggart, as a partner in that team, spoke about the firm's commitment to having its lawyers qualified as Trust and Estate Practitioners.
In July 2017 Maclay Murray & Spens announced a merger with Dentons, then the largest law firm in the world by number of lawyers. The combination was completed on 27 October 2017 with the adoption of the Dentons brand. Later professional profiles associate Biggart with Dentons.
