Andrew Buchanan is an Australian lawyer based in Brisbane, Queensland. He was admitted to the Queensland bar in 1983 and has worked as a partner of Feez Ruthning, a long-established Brisbane law firm.
Education
Buchanan studied at the Australian National University in Canberra, where he received a Bachelor of Arts. The university was created by an Act of the federal parliament passed on 1 August 1946 as a research institution for postgraduate work. It began offering undergraduate courses in 1960, after merging with Canberra University College.
He also completed a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at the University of Queensland. The university has operated since 1909 and is one of Australia's leading research and teaching institutions.
The honours law degree is designed to meet the academic requirements for admission as a legal practitioner in Australia. Graduates then apply through the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board, which makes recommendations to the Supreme Court on admission to the legal profession in Queensland.
Career
Buchanan's documented professional career is in Queensland legal practice. He was admitted to the bar in Queensland in 1983 and later worked as a partner of Feez Ruthning in Brisbane.
Feez Ruthning traces its origins to the Brisbane practice of solicitor Robert Little, who had been practising in the city since 1846. Adolph Feez and, later, A. F. T. Ruthning were central to the firm's development. It became Feez Ruthning & Co. in 1927, and it kept that name until 1986, when the '& Co.' was dropped. Throughout the twentieth century it was regarded as one of the leading law firms in Queensland.
In 1996 the firm merged with Allen Allen & Hemsley, a Sydney practice, after the Allens Arthur Robinson Group, formed in 1994, had brought the two firms into a shared network. Feez Ruthning later became part of the Allens group.
