Andrew Cockburn was born on January 7, 1947, in London, United Kingdom. He is a son of Claud Cockburn, a journalist and Communist author, and Patricia Cockburn, an Irish writer, traveller, conchologist and artist, as well as the granddaughter of British colonial administrator Henry Arthur Blake and British politician George Arbuthnot.
Andrew is a brother of Alexander Cockburn and Patrick Cockburn, also journalists, and a half-brother - Sarah Cockburn, a mystery writer, best-known as Sarah Caudwell, and Claudia Cockburn, who was a disability activist.
The Cockburns family is also related to Sir George Cockburn, 10th Baronet, who ordered the Burning of Washington in 1814.

During his career, Andrew has written several books, including "The Threat: Inside the Soviet Military Machine" (1983), "Dangerous Liaison: The Inside Story of the US-Israeli Covert Relationship" (1991), "One Point Safe" (1997), "Out of the Ashes: The Resurrection of Saddam Hussein" (1999), "Kill Chain: The Rise of the High-Tech Assassins" (2015) and others.
Also, he has acted as a producer for documentary films, mainly in collaboration with Leslie Cockburn, his wife. In 1981, he produced his film "The Red Army", that was the first in-depth report on the serious deficiencies of Soviet military power and won a Peabody Award.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cockburn began to cover middle eastern subjects. In 1991, he produced a documentary on the after-effects of the first Gulf war - "The War We Left Behind". Later, in 2009, Andrew, together with his wife, Leslie, produced "American Casino", a documentary, covering the financial crisis of 2007-2008.
During his career, Andrew has also written many articles on the subject of the United States and Soviet military power. He contributed his works to National Geographic, the Los Angeles Times, the London Review of Books, Smithsonian, Vanity Fair, Harper's Magazine, CounterPunch, Condé Nast Traveler, The New York Times and the Dungarvan Observer.
Moreover, Andrew lectured at numerous military bases, foreign policy forums and colleges.
Currently, Andrew is an editor of Harper's Magazine.
