Andrew Crumey was born on October 12, 1961, in Glasgow.
Andrew Crumey studied at the University of St Andrews. He also attended Imperial College London where he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Andrew Crumey was a director of West London Nightline and care worker with Westminster Mencap from 1986 to 1989. He moved to Newcastle upon Tyne in 1992. He started to work as a teacher of mathematics in secondary schools. However, in 1996 he became a book reviewer. Crumey held this post until 2006. He has also written for the Guardian, Independent, Telegraph, Financial Times and other newspapers. Crumey regularly appears at literary/scientific festivals and conferences, and teaches creative writing through seminars, workshops and mentoring.
Crumey's first book Music, in a Foreign Language, was published in 1994. Soon he published other books as Pfitz and D'Alembert’s Principle. Pfitz was a New York Times Notable Book, and D'Alembert's Principle was called in for the Booker Prize. Crumey won the £60,000 Northern Rock Foundation Writers Award, the UK's largest literary prize, for his most recent novel Sputnik Caledonia, that was published in 2008. His eighth book, The Great Chain of Unbeing, was published in 2018.
