Andrew received his B.A. from Oberlin College, Ohio, in 1976. Then he gained a Master of Divinity from Church Division School Pacific, Berkeley, in 1981 and a Master of Library Science from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1989.
Andrew was curate of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Lincoln, Nebraska, from 1981 to 1983. Then he was vicar of Trinity Episcopal Church, Kirksville, Missouri, in 1983-1985 and reference librarian at Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, New York, from 1989 to 1990.
Andrew was interim co-director of Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary, New York City, form 1990 to 2000. Kadel was also a library director at Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, in 2000-2002. Since 2003 he was director of St. Mark's library General Theological Seminary, New York City.
Andrew has been a member of the American Theological Library Association (convenor, 1994-96), Princeton University Library Assistants (vice president, 1988-89), Beta Phi Mu.
Andrew married Deborah Michele Kilmer on May 30, 1975, but they divorced on March 8, 1989. Then he married Paula Rachel Schaap on May 22, 1999. Kadel has 3 children: Rachel Meredith Kadel-Garcia, Elisabeth Kilmer, Magdalen Anne.
