Andrew Knox is an Australian lawyer based in Brisbane, Queensland, whose career centred on corporate advisory work. He spent more than thirty years as a partner at Allens and its predecessor, the Brisbane firm Feez Ruthning, and later became known for governance roles, including membership of the Takeovers Panel and a 2026 appointment to the Legal Aid Queensland Board.
Education
Knox studied at the Australian National University in Canberra, where he completed a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Laws. The university was established by federal legislation in 1946 as a national institution with a strong emphasis on research, and its combined economics and law programmes gave students training in both commercial and legal study.
He was admitted to the bar in Queensland in 1983, which marked his entry into legal practice in that state. Admission to the legal profession in Queensland is granted by the Supreme Court of Queensland, and the admission placed him within the Brisbane legal community in which his later career developed.
Career
Knox's professional career developed largely within Brisbane law firms. Feez Ruthning traced its origins to Robert Little's Brisbane practice, founded in 1846, and to a merger of early Queensland practices in the early twentieth century. The firm adopted the name Feez Ruthning & Co in 1927 and Feez Ruthning in 1986, and it was documented as Knox's firm during his partnership there.
Feez Ruthning became part of the national practice of Allens Arthur Robinson in 1996, and Knox subsequently worked as a partner at Allens for more than thirty years. Allens traces its lineage to nineteenth-century firms, including Allen Allen & Hemsley in Sydney and Feez Ruthning & Co in Brisbane, and it is now an international commercial law firm with offices across Australia and Asia. In that setting Knox practised as a corporate advisory lawyer, a role his professional biography describes as the principal focus of his legal career.
From 2002 to 2005 he was a member of the Takeovers Panel, an independent Australian body whose part-time members are appointed under the ASIC Act and nominated for knowledge of business, law, economics, and related fields. Later public service included his 2026 appointment by the Queensland Government to the Board of Legal Aid Queensland, a three-year term beginning on 6 February 2026. The board is responsible for the strategic direction and management of Legal Aid Queensland, the state's publicly funded legal aid body.
Membership
Knox is a Graduate and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a professional body that provides director education and promotes governance standards in Australia. He has been a Fellow of the institute since March 2007.
His governance service also included more than fifteen years chairing the governing bodies of several not-for-profit entities in education and superannuation, according to his professional biography. Several of his board and council roles connect his legal background with community organisations, including Water Polo Australia, the national governing body for water polo.
