He gained distinction in his Master"s degree in Victorian Literature from the University of Leeds, and moved to the University of Sheffield to study for a Doctor of Philosophy with Sally Shuttleworth. The subject of his Doctor of Philosophy thesis became the basis of his first book Violent Women and Sensation Fiction, which was published in 2007.
He is best known for his work on the sensation novel, having published three books and numerous articles on the genre, but he has also published critical work on Dickens and the Gothic. The Cambridge Companion to Sensation Fiction, Cambridge University Press.
