Career
He was a sergeant assigned to the marine detachment aboard the United States Ship Richmond when it was sent to fight in the American Civil War during the Battle of Mobile Bay. He was initially discharged from the Marine Corps August 21, 1858 but went on to serve three more enlistments. He honorably discharged the final time on October 20, 1866.

Citation: As captain of a gun on board the U.S.S. Richmond during action against rebel forts and gunboats and with the ram Tennessee in Mobile Bay, 5 August 1864. Despite damage to his ship and the loss of several men on board as enemy fire raked her decks, Sgt.
