Graduated from Harvard, 1749.

Career

Judge of Inferior Court Common Pleas for Essex County (Massachusetts), 1761-1775. Member Massachusetts General Court from Salem, 1762-1767. Appointed a mandamus councilor, 1774, refused to serve.

Founder American Academy Arts and Sciences. Elected member American Philosophical Society, 1773. Author: An Essay on Comets, in Two Parts, 1772, reprinted, 1811.

Elegy on the late Professor Winthrop, 1st published in Independent Chronicle, 1779.
