Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles was born on March 13, 1871, in Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands. He was the son of a retired Scottish wool manufacturer.
Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles attended the Sandhurst Academy as a cadet but gave up the idea of an army career and continued his education at Heidelberg University in Germany.
Working as a freelance photographer and journalist, Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles traveled widely in Europe, living at various times in Rotterdam, Brussels, and Berlin. In 1895 he founded the illustrated magazine Sport in Bild in Berlin. During the next ten years, Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles contributed to a number of magazines in America, France, Belgium, Holland, Italy, and England, including Britain's Wide World.
Taking up residence in England sometime after 1906, he devoted the rest of his life to the study and practice of naturopathy, a healing method that had saved him from death. In Hastings, he established a hydropathic spa, the Riposo.
