A reader in American history at the University of Cambridge, Preston is originally from Brockville, Ontario and was educated at the University of Toronto. Preston is also a fellow at Clare College, where he acts as a director of studies in history. His prior publications include The War Council: McGeorge Bundy, the National Security Council, and Vietnam (2006) and Nixon in the World: United States. Foreign Relations, 1969-1977 (2008).
