He was the son of Charles Wilkinson of Boroughbridge and educated at Clare College, Cambridge (1715) and trained for the law at the Middle Temple (1719).

He would retain the seat until 1772, with the exception of the years 1765–1768, when he was displaced by Viscount Villiers. He was Storekeeper of the Ordnance from 1746 to 1762 and from 1765 to 1778.
