Yen was born on March 4, 1948 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of Andrew and Josephine Yen.
Yen received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Haverford College in 1969. A year later he earned his Master of Science degree from the University of Washington. In 1976, Andrew was given a Ph.D. from Cornell University.
Yen began his career as a research fellow at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in 1976. Two years later he took a position of a member of staff at Sloan Kettering Institute. Then in 1981, Andrew became the flow cytometry core director at the University of Iowa. In 1988 he was appointed a professor of biomedical sciences at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition, in 1992 Yen began working as a director of Graduate Studies in Environmental Toxicology at the same college.
Andrew is a director of the Biomedical Sciences Flow Cytometry Core Laboratory at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is also an an associate director of the Institute for Comparative Environmental Toxicology of Cornell University.

On February 1, 1975 Andrew Yen married Kathleen Betit Yen. They have three children.
