Judge District Court of Texas, 1871-1876. Member Texas Senate, 1876-1879. Appointed United States district attorney, Eastern District of Texas, January, 1879, but did not qualify.

United States district judge, Northern District of Texas, 1879-1892. United States circuit judge, 5th Circuit, March 17, since 1892.
