University of Illinois, 1905. Member Legislature of New York, 1881. Member Board of Education, Albany, New York, 1878-1880, 1890-1892.
Member State Normal College Board, 1882-1886. Judge of United States Court of Alabama Claims, 1885 - 86. State Superintendent Public Instruction of New York, 1886-1892.
President National Association of School Superintendents, 1890-1892. Superintendent of Instruction, Cleveland, Ohio, Public Schools, 1892-1894. President University of Illinois, 1894-1904.
Member of the United States Board of Indian Commissioners since 1902, and now Chairman. Director National Commercial Bank, and trustee of National Savings Bank of Albany, New York. Elected 1898 first Superintendent Schools of Greater New York, but declined.
President of North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, 1902-1903. Member Phi Delta Phi Fraternity, American Social Science Association, American Geographical Association, and American Association of Authors. Honourable member Wisconsin State Historical Association, Chicago Historical Association, and St. Louis Railway Club. Commissioner of Education, State of New York, since 1904.
