1891-1901 associate professor, from 1901 professor, Kazan’ University. Made extensive gcobotanical and floristic surveys of the eastern part of the European Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and Western Kazakhstan 1900-1901 published a major work entitled Materialy dlya poznaniya pochv i rastitel'nostiZapadnoy Sitin'(Material on the Identification of the Soils and Vegetation of Western Sibera), in which he described the general geography of the region, examined the sequence of formation of its present forest and steppe vegetation and analysed the origin of the Siberian chernozem and solonchak soils.
