After graduate worked at I. P. Pavlov and L. A. Orbeli’s laboratories, then for a number of years headed Physiological Section, Psychophysiological Laboratory, Leningrad Institute of Civil Aviation Engineer. Also head Physiological Laboratory, Leningrad Ophthalmological Institute. Head, Physiological Section, Leningrad Brain Institute.
Head, Theoretical Section, Leningrad Neurosurgical Research Institute. From 1953 head Chair of Physiology, Naval Medical Academy. After it was merged with Kirov Military Medical Academy worked at latter.
Specialized in physiology of sense organs, particularly vision. Discovered reciprocal relation between the rods and cones of the retina and determined the importance of this phenomenon in the eye’s adaptation to darkness. Discovered phosphene phenomenon caused by the action of electr current on the retina and studied elcctroretinography with glaucoma and the role of the symphatheticnervous system in the function of the accomodatory muscle.
Determined the trifacial nerve fiber’s vasodilatory affect on the vessels of the ciliary body. In a study of neurogenic dystrophy theory demonstrated importance of disturbances of the afferential innervation. One of first to study effects of ultra-sound on the body and the somatic effects of ionizing radiation on the body.
Editor, radiobiology section, 2nd ed of “Biomedical Engineering”(Large Medical Encyclopedia). Member, Leningrad and Moscow Sciences Ophthalmological Social. Attended numerous ophthalmological congesses and sessions.
From 1955 Soviet permanent representative, United Nations Sciences Committee. Wrote over 300 works.
