1896 graduate Saint St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy.
Received surgical training at provincial military hospitals. 1899—1910 surgeon, Kronstadt Naval Hospital. 1901 defended doctor’s thesis on the effect of sympathectomy on experimental epilepsy.
1905 studied neurosurgery abroad. From 1914 professor Chair of Operative Surgery, from 1918 head Chair of Traumatology and Orthopedics, Petrograd Psychoneurological Institute (now Leningrad Institute of Sanitation and Hygiene).
During World War 1 also helped to organize institutions for the treatment and care of war cripples. From 1917 founder-director, Petrograd Institute of Physical Surgery (from 1924 State Traumatological Institute). Founderhead, Chair of Orthopedics and Traumatology, State Institute of Medical Knowledge.
1924 founder. Chair of Surgical Neuropathology, State Traumatological Institute. From 1938 founder-director, Leningrad Neurosurgical Institute, which now bears his name. Collegium member, Leningrad Oblast Health Department.
Deputy, Leningrad City Soviet. Member, All-Russian Association of Sciences and Technical Workers for the Promotion of Socialist Construction. Chairman, Leningrad Social of Surgeons and Orthopedists.
Company-chairman, Pirogov Surgical Social. Wrote over 120 works.
