Career
1893—1917 worked at Saint St. Petersburg (Petrograd) University. From 1917 professor, Permanent University. From 1924 professor, Saratov University.
1932-1934 associate, Leningrad Laboratory of Biochemistry and Plant Physiology, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1934-1938 director, from 1938 associate, Institute of Plant Physiology, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Did research on photosynthesis.
Perfected instrument for the exact analysis of small gas exchanges (Povlovtsev-Rikhler apparatus), which is used in many Soviet physiological laboratories. Made studies of the resistance of plants to drought, cold and salty soils. Also made studies of fermentation, the biochemistry of agric crops and the immunity of plants to fungi and other diseases.
