Andrey L. Rogach is a Belarusian chemist and materials scientist whose research on colloidal semiconductor and metal nanocrystals, quantum dots, perovskites, and photonic materials has advanced energy-related and optoelectronic applications. He is Chair Professor at City University of Hong Kong and founding director of its Centre for Functional Photonics.
Background
Andrey L. Rogach was born on October 17, 1969. He is Belarusian and began his scientific career in Minsk, where he studied chemistry and conducted doctoral research on the formation and properties of silver nanoparticles in different media. His professional development subsequently took him to research institutions and universities in Germany, Ireland, and Hong Kong, where his work expanded from colloidal nanocrystals to photonic, energy, and optoelectronic materials.
Education
Rogach studied chemistry at Belarusian State University in Minsk, receiving a Diploma with honors in 1991. He completed a PhD in Physical Chemistry at the same university in 1995 with research on the formation and properties of silver nanoparticles in different media. At Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, he completed a habilitation in Experimental Physics on light emission and harvesting with semiconductor nanocrystals, emphasizing their synthesis, spectroscopy, and applications.
Career
Rogach began his professional research career as a research assistant at the Physico-Chemical Research Institute from 1991 to 1995 and then served as a senior research associate there in 1996. He continued his postdoctoral and research work at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the University of Hamburg, where he worked from 1995 to 2002. From 2002 to 2009 he was a lead scientist in the Photonics and Optoelectronics Group of the Physics Department and Center for NanoScience at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, completing his habilitation in Experimental Physics during this period. He was an SFI Walton Visiting Professor in the School of Physics and Department of Clinical Medicine at Trinity College Dublin from 2005 to 2006 and later held an adjunct professorship there. Rogach joined City University of Hong Kong as a professor in the Department of Physics and Materials Science in 2009, became founding director of the Centre for Functional Photonics in 2010, and was appointed Chair Professor of Photonics Materials in 2012. He is currently Chair Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and continues to lead the Centre for Functional Photonics. His research concerns the synthesis, assembly, optical spectroscopy, and applications of colloidal semiconductor and metal nanocrystals, including quantum dots, perovskites, carbon dots, nanoclusters, and related hybrid structures for light-emitting devices, photodetectors, solar-energy technologies, photocatalysis, and other photonic applications.
Achievements
Ranked eighth among the top authors publishing on nanocrystals during the preceding decade in Thomson Scientific Essential Science Indicators, in a list associated with leading researchers including Alivisatos, Peng, Bawendi, Grätzel, Murray, Sun, Weller, Manna, and Whetten.
Ranked 51st among the world's 100 leading materials scientists of the preceding decade in the 2011 Thomson Reuters ranking.
Authored more than 500 scientific publications in the fields of semiconductor and metal nanocrystals, quantum dots, photonic materials, and related applications.
His research has received tens of thousands of citations and has placed him among the world's highly cited scientists, including repeated recognition in cross-field and materials-science listings.
