Born in Banogue, County, Dunworth first excelled at hurling in his youth. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the minor team He made his senior debut during the 1966 championship.

He also played with Banogue, Emmets and Throughout his career Dunworth made 9 championship appearances.
He retired from inter-county hurling following the conclusion of the 1973 championship.
