McHale went to a convent school for girls in London and Street Benedict"s School, Ealing for 6th form. On her release, she went to Warwick University to read Politics and discovered her vocation. She then went onto study drama at the Drama Studio London. Her work with comedians Catherine Tate and Lee Mack has singled her out as one of the most gifted comic actresses at work today. She has appeared in the latter thrice, once in 2006 as a clown instructor, again in 2009 as Lola, the owner of a lesbian bookshop, and then in 2014 as a nurse She has also been in Miranda written and starring Miranda Hart and latterly The Bill.
