Background
Angelina Kim was born in 1961. She was born in the period when Malaya was moving toward independence from Britain, which was achieved in 1957 and was followed by the formation of Malaysia in 1963, and her later legal career developed in Kuala Lumpur.
Career
Angelina Kim is a partner of Shook Lin & Bok in Kuala Lumpur. The firm began in 1918 as Messrs Yong Shook Lin, a Kuala Lumpur practice founded by Yong Shook Lin, who that year became the first Chinese admitted to the Malayan bar after studying at Cambridge University. In 1938, Tan Teow Bok joined as a partner and the practice was renamed Messrs Shook Lin & Bok.
Yong's son, Pung How, joined the firm in 1952 after graduating in law from Cambridge, and under his senior partnership the firm grew into one of the largest law firms in Malaya. In 1964 the firm opened an office in Singapore, and by the 1980s it was regarded as one of the leading local firms in that country.
Today the firm describes itself as the oldest law firm of local origin in Malaysia, offering full-service legal work across corporate, litigation, and regulatory matters. Its Kuala Lumpur head office is located in the AmBank Group Building on Jalan Raja Chulan, and Angelina Kim practises law there as a partner.
