The title novella "Behind the Red Mist" is a Vietnamese "Back To the Future", a social satire in which a young man in the Hanoi of the eighties receives an electric shock and is transported back to his same apartment block in 1967 wartime Vietnam during the American bombing. He not only witnesses the war with the eyes of someone who knows its outcome, but participates in his parents' courtship and discovers some truths about the generation held up to his own as a role model.

Ho Anh Thai was born October 18, 1960, in Hanoi, Vietnam, a son of Ho Si Lang and Ho Thi Diep.
Ho Anh Thai studied at Vietnam College of Diplomacy and received Master of Arts in 1983. Later he began to study at University of Delhi and finished it with Ph.D. in 1994.
After graduation, Anh Thai worked as a diplomat and journalist abroad, especially in India, Iran and Indonesia.
Ho Anh Thai first became known as a literary teenage prodigy with the publication of his first stories. As he matured, he became a voice for his generation. Some of his works of this period are the novels Men and Vehicle Run in the Moonlight (1986), The Women on the Island (1986). Early in the 1990s, he published a series of humorous and thoughtful stories about the six years he has spent abroad in India: The Man Who Stood on One Leg, The Indian, A Sigh through the Laburnums.
From the 2000s, his published books became more experimental, playful in language. Ho Anh Thai came back to the theme of India with the novel The Buddha, Savitri and I, published in 2007.
He is also a lecturer and an Indologist. He was the elected president of Hanoi Writers’ Association from 2000 to 2010. He is the Vietnam Deputy Ambassador to Iran (2011-2015), and Indonesia (from 2015).
