Anil Bhusan Dutt was born on the 13th of April, 1904 in Meshabchak. He was the youngest son of W.C. Dutt and Biraj Mohini Devi.

Anil Bhusan received his early education at Sahebganj in Bihar and later at the Railway School at Asansol in Bengal from where he passed the Matriculation Examination of the Calcutta University in 1920.
In 1924 he graduated from the Calcutta University and got a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) degree, in 1926 - Master of Science (Geology), in 1960 - Doctor of Science (Geology).
In 1929 Dutt joined Geological Survey of India. In 1937-1942 he worked for the Government of Burma as Geologist (on deputation). From 1942 to 1948 he was a Geologist at Bokaro Coalfield; in 1948-1949 - worked as Petrologist for the Geological Survey of India. In 1951-1953 Dutt was the Officer-in-Charge, Geological Survey of India Training Camps; in 1953-1960 – Paleontologist-in-Charge, Paleontology Division of the Geological Survey of India; in 1958-1960 – Deputy Director (Surveys); in 1960-1961 he worked as Director of Geology & Mining in Assam. Toured Burma.
Dr Dutt was married in 1934 to Arati Mitra who hailed from an aristocratic family in Calcutta that originally migrated from Barisal (now in Bangladesh). Their only son Amit Bhusan Dutt, born in 1943, became a distinguished geologist and rose to the position of Senior Deputy Director General of the Geological Survey of India.
