He retired from government service. Later, he got a doctorate in Urdu literature from University of the Punjab. In early years of his lectureship at the Government College, Lahore, and later at the Government College, Faisalabad, Nagi passed West Pakistan Provincial Civil Service examination.
After retirement from the civil service in 1999, he again joined Government College University, Lahore, in 2003 as a visiting professor and remained associated with his alma mater until 2007.
He regularly wrote literary columns and himself editied a quarterly journal by the name of Danishwar. His Novel Behind the Wall(Dewar kay Pachey) was well appreciated by his readers and fans.His books Modern Urdu Poems from Pakistan was received well in the literary circles both nationally and internationally.Another book Nazir Ahmed ke Novel Nagari is also used as a reference book for Master of Arts Urdu Literature.
During a long career as a bureaucrate in the provincial civil service of Punjab, Nagi served in various positions including Deputy Secretary Education.
Anis Nagi was on the forefront of the literary movements of 1960s,being an advocate of Azad Nazam and New Poetry(Nai Shairey).He was a believer of Existentialism and fan of Pablo Neruda,Albert Camus & Jean Paul Satre and translated their works in Urdu.He himself wrote 79 books covering a broad arena varing from poerty,criticism,novels,short stories and biographies.
