This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. Anna was born on December 12, 1815 in Washington, Washington, D. C. , United States. Her ancestors had been prominent in Maryland for several generations.
Her father’s people were Quakers, but he himself, after becoming a sort of unattached Methodist preacher, entered the navy as a chaplain.
Dorsey was educated at home.
Anna began while still a girl to write verse which proved acceptable to the magazines.
Nearly everything she wrote was popular, and all of it— whether like Woodreve Manor (1852), touching on slavery and devoted to “the merits and the follies of the times, ” or, like Palms (1887), devoted to the life of ancient Rome—was concerned to display before the world what she held to be the infallible light of her Church.
Her hesitancy on moral grounds to depict incidents of unjust suffering naturally curtailed the power of her work.
She shunned personal publicity, and judged herself with modesty—she had not, she said, either “the genius of a Longfellow or the highly attuned talent of a Hemans".
As a widow, she continued to live in Washington, busy with her novels and with her children and grandchildren, comforted from time to time by blessings from the Pope and by praise of her work from the ecclesiastical sources in America.

In 1840 Dorsey became a Catholic, as her husband did also at about the same time, both of them influenced by the Catholic revival then current in England.
Dorsey married Lorenzo Dorsey of Baltimore in 1837. She was the mother of five children, four of whom lived to maturity—one to be killed in battle during the Civil War.
