Since 1918 to 1922, Ostroumova-Lebedeva held the post of a teacher at Higher Institute of Photography and Photographic Engineering (present-day Saint Petersburg State University of Film and Television).
Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva was born on May 17, 1871 in Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire (present-day Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation). She was a daughter of Pyotr Ivanovich Ostroumov, a senator, and Maria Klimentevna Chekhovich.
During the period from 1889 to 1892, Anna studied at Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design, where Vasily Vasilyevich Mate was her mentor. In 1892, she enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Arts, graduating in 1900. There, at the Academy, Ilya Repin, Konstantin Savitsky and Pavel Chistyakov were among her teachers.
Between 1898-1899, Ostroumova-Lebedeva attended the Académie Colarossi in Paris.
Between 1898-1899, Anna worked as an assistant to James Abbott McNeill Whistler in his studio. Since 1899, she actively participated in the activities of Mir iskusstva art group in Saint Petersburg and the following year, in 1900, she became its member. In 1901, Ostroumova-Lebedeva produced first series of woodcuts of Saint Petersburg cityscapes for Sergei Diaghilev.
Throughout the 1900's and the 1910's, Anna travelled around Europe and worked as a book illustrator. After Russian Revolution of 1917, she acted as a member of People's Commissariat for Education Expert Committee.
Since 1918 to 1922, Ostroumova-Lebedeva held the post of a teacher at Higher Institute of Photography and Photographic Engineering (present-day Saint Petersburg State University of Film and Television). During the period from 1934 to 1935, Anna taught at Ilya Repin Saint Petersburg State Academic Institute of Fine Arts, Sculpture and Architecture (present-day Imperial Academy of Arts).
During World War II, she remained in the Siege of Leningrad, where she continued to create paintings and was engaged in social work.
Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva was a renowned Russian painter. She was also known as one of the pioneers of the woodcut technique in Russia. Also, Anna received many awards, including Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1946), Medal "For the Defence of Leningrad" and Medal "For Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945".
Also, in 1946, she was made a People's Artist of the RSFSR.
