Anne Ayres was born on January 3, 1816 in London, England. When she was twenty years old, she came to New York with her father, Robert Ayres.
She was educated in London.
In New York Ayers tutored pupils from wealthy families, among whom was a niece of Dr. William Augustus Muhlenberg, rector of the Church of the Holy Communion. In the summer of 1845, she heard him preach a sermon on "Jephtha's Vow, " in the chapel of St. Paul's College. Upon, she decided to devote her life to religious service. On November 1, 1845, she was consecrated by Muhlenberg a Sister of the Holy Communion.
In 1852, Ayres and other women who joined her formed the Sisterhood of the Holy Communion to teach at the Church of the Holy Communion's school, to work among the poor and to do other charity work.
During the epidemic of 1849, she rendered valuable aid in the cholera hospitals. She conducted an infirmary in the rear-tenement of an alley near the church, which was the real beginning of St. Luke's Hospital, also one of Dr. Muhlenberg's projects. Here she died thirty-eight years later.
