Anne Elizabeth Ulvestad is an American art director and graphic designer whose career included magazine design, teaching, communications, nonprofit administration, and missionary work. She became section designer and later art director of The World & I magazine in Washington, and founded Graphics for the World in 1993.
Background
Ulvestad was born on October 19, 1953, in Yonkers, New York, to William George Bachop and Rita Agnes Schug Bachop. Her early background connected the New York metropolitan area with professional training in nursing and later religious education.
She married Odd Inge Ulvestad on July 1, 1982, and they have one child, Kjersti Anita. Her professional life subsequently included work in the United States, Kenya, and The Gambia before returning to magazine and graphic design in Washington.
Education
Ulvestad studied at the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City, where she completed a Bachelor of Science qualification and trained as a registered nurse in 1974. Hunter-Bellevue developed from the relationship between Hunter College and Bellevue Hospital and became part of New York's movement toward baccalaureate-level nursing education.
She pursued postgraduate study at Unification Theological Seminary in Barrytown, New York, from 1979 to 1980. The seminary opened in 1975 and provided theological education for leaders and participants in the Unification movement.
Career
Ulvestad began her professional life in New York City as a missionary with the Unification Church from 1974 to 1979. She then served as communications director of the Association for Edition and Development in Kenya from 1980 to 1982. Her work in communications placed her in an international development setting before she moved into education and nonprofit administration.
From 1982 to 1984, Ulvestad taught art at Muslim High School in The Gambia and directed The Heart-Parent Scholarship Foundation in Banjul. The school-teaching role connected her artistic training with secondary education, while the foundation represented her work in scholarship and community support. In 1985 she worked as a graphic designer for Trinity Corporation in New York City.
Ulvestad joined The World & I magazine in Washington as a section designer in 1986 and became its art director in 1991. Magazine art direction involves coordinating typography, illustration, layout, and visual presentation; at The World & I, her work belonged to the print-publishing environment of late twentieth-century Washington. She founded Graphics for the World in 1993, extending her professional activity through an independent design enterprise.

Religion
Ulvestad was associated with the Unification Church, serving as a missionary in New York City and undertaking postgraduate study at Unification Theological Seminary in Barrytown, New York. The movement developed from the religious teachings of Sun Myung Moon and combined Christian terminology with a distinctive theology centered on spiritual restoration, family life, and the unity of humankind.
Unification Theological Seminary opened in Barrytown in 1975 as an institution for theological and religious education within the movement. Ulvestad's missionary work and seminary studies formed part of her early adult life before she moved into communications, teaching, nonprofit administration, and graphic design.
