She retired from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (The National Institute of Standards and Technology) in 1994, after a 31 year career there. She currently co-chairs the Interamerican University Network of Academies of Sciences women for science program Born on 4 March 1929 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Levelt Sengers earned candidaats (an undergraduate degree) in physics and chemistry from the University of Amsterdam in 1950, and completed her Doctor of Philosophy from the same university in 1958.
She emigrated to the United States in 1963 and joined the National Bureau of Standards (later renamed to The National Institute of Standards and Technology).
She is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Physical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Sciences.
