(The Swedish-born LPGA champion takes readers inside the w...)
The Swedish-born LPGA champion takes readers inside the world of golf to teach golfers of all levels of skill how to play and win like a pro, with detailed instructions on the swing, fundamentals of grip and posture, and putting, along with tips on using every club in the bag and furnishing helpful advice on her own innovative training regimen.
Annika Sörenstam is a Swedish-born American professional golfer. She went down in the history of the game as one of its most successful representatives. Competing as a professional in the Ladies Professional Golf Association from 1992 to 2008, she earned 90 first titles at the international tournaments and won 72 official tournaments, ten majors and 18 other global tournaments among them.
Background
Annika Sörenstam was born on October 9, 1970 in Bro, Stockholm County, Sweden. She is a daughter of Tom Sörenstam, former IBM executive, and Gunilla Sörenstam, a retired bank employee. Annika has a younger sister Charlotta who is a professional golfer too.
Education
Born into a family of good recreational golf players, Annika Sörenstam was involved in sport since her early years. She tried her hand at soccer, ski, and tennis, particularly excelling in the latter two. Björn Borg, an eminent tennis player of the late 1970s and early 1980s, was among Annika's favorite athletes.
Sörenstam switched her attention to golf as a potential career in 1982 for the first time and two years later joined the Swedish junior golf program. A very shy girl in youth, Annika often intentionally let her rivals surpass her to escape making a victory speech. As an amateur player, she earned the St. Rule Trophy in St Andrews, Scotland, and was the second in the Swedish national mother/daughter Championship. Sörenstam became a member of the Swedish national team at the age of seventeen. Pia Nilsson, one of the team's coaches, had a big influence on Annika.
Before studying at college, Sörenstam served as a personal assistant at the Swedish Professional Golfers' Association and finished first in three tournaments of the Swedish Golf Tour. In 1990, she moved to the United States where she played for the University of Arizona for two subsequent years, majoring in nutrition. She won a National Collegiate Athletic Association title in 1991 and earned All-America honors in 1991 and 1992.
The start of Annika Sörenstam's career can be counted from 1992 when she left the University of Arizona and became a professional golfer. The next year, she qualified for the European Women's Tour where she was given the title of the Rookie of the Year. She then joined the Ladies Professional Golf Association and entered the top ten at the Association events five times by the end of 1994. The debut victory that Sörenstam had a year later at the U.S. Women's Open, as well as the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average in the season, kick-started a striking series of success. By the end of 1996, Sörenstam had led in four more tournaments, including one more Women's Open, and earned the LPGA Player of the Year award. Annika was in the top ten in fourteen competitions and in the top five in seven competitions.
In 1997, Annika Sörenstam was expected to earn the third straight victory at the U.S. Open. Although the athlete excelled during the season, having six wins to her credit, she didn't manage to lead again at one of the most prestigious tournaments in women's golf. Kerrie Webb was her major rival in the season and took the Vare Trophy. The challenges motivated Sörenstam to train harder, and that was paid off with the LPGA Player of the Year title.
Sörenstam won five championships in 1998 and ended up the season with a scoring average below 70 (69.99). After a mid-level season the next year which was marked by just one victory, Sörenstam opened up a new century with five wins. The athlete remained at the top of success in the next couple of years. The eight victories at LPGA events in 2001, including her second major tournament, the Kraft Nabisco Championship, was crowned by a record of 59 points in a round of a professional tournament. The record in the number of victories in the LPGA's history of nearly 40 years was shattered in 2002 with 11 first places.
The following year turned to be the pinnacle of Sörenstam's career as she won the LPGA Championship and the Women's British Open to complete the career Grand Slam. That same year, Sörenstam also became the first woman to compete in a men's Professional Golf Association event (the Bank of America Colonial Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas) since Babe Didrikson Zaharias in 1945. Although she didn't make the final, it was a great experience for her.
Annika Sörenstam spoke about retirement in 2004 for the first time. Nevertheless, that year, she surpassed her previous achievements by making the top 10 in 16 of the 18 LPGA tournaments and scoring an average of 68.69. The 10th career major title, at the U.S. Open, followed two years later. Sörenstam's productivity gradually went down, and she finally retired for good in 2008. Annika Sörenstam competed for Team Europe eight times and was a three-time assistant captain at the event in the 2010s. She also captained the Team in 2017.
Upon retirement from competitive golf, Sörenstam concentrated on the family life and further development of the ANNIKA brand established at the end of her athletic career. The brand comprises a variety of business and charitable initiatives related to golf. For example, the ANNIKA Collection, a line of high-end women's golf apparel with partner Cutter & Buck, has made over $50 million in worldwide sales since its inception in 2003. Another ANNIKA's brand venture, the ANNIKA Academy, was set up in 2007.
An eminent golfer, Annika Sörenstam regularly shares her rich experience, covering the LPGA major events for NBC and as a motivational speaker for many famed companies, such as 3M, AHEAD, Callaway, Cutter & Buck, Golfing World, Lexus, Cabot Saint Lucia and Rolex.
A Swedish golf star on both the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour and on a broader international level, Annika Sörenstam has set numerous records during the course of her career, the major of which are the lowest season scoring average, 68.6969, and 59 points in a competition (the only female player to earn such result). She also held the record for points earned in the Solheim Cup till 2011 (beaten by Laura Davies). Annika remains the LPGA's all-time money leader with over $22 million in earnings.
She won LPGA Tour 72 times, what is the 3rd result of all time, and led in the Ladies European Tour seventeen times. Sörenstam is a holder of eight Player of the Year awards and six Vare Trophies. Sörenstam's athletic achievements have also been marked by such accolades, as the Patty Berg Award, H. M. The King's Medal, the Bob Jones Award, the Old Tom Morris Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among others. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2003.

"When I first came on tour, I was playing for money. Now I'm playing to win golf tournaments and the money is more than I ever dreamed I could make."
"I find it flattering to be compared to Tiger."
"I am a person that's all or nothing. If I can't be on top, because I have been there, then I don't know if I can handle that. I don't like finishing in the middle. I never have."
