Annouchka Gravel Galouchko is a Canadian visual artist, illustrator, and author. She finds inspiration both for her colorful paintings and writings in childhood. Galouchko’s works made in mixed media discover our identity and origins through the combination of elements from different cultures and traditions.
Background
Ethnicity:
The parents of Annouchka Gravel Galouchko’s French father came from Russia, and her Québécois mother was born in Saskatchewan.
Annouchka Gravel Galouchko was born on July 26, 1960, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Education
Annouchka Gravel Galouchko was a fortunate child who had the chance to live in several different countries, including Mexico, Austria, Egypt, and Iran. She also was lucky enough to have loving parents who encouraged her interest in art.
Galouchko’s gifts were evident from a very young age. As a young girl, she painted, made jewelry and Poppets, and sculpted.
With an intention to become a full-time artist, she entered the Université du Québec à Montréal (the University of Quebec in Montreal). Galouchko graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Annouchka Gravel Galouchko had elaborated her personal style in painting by the age of twenty. She had several exhibitions of her early works.
The first prize for “an unpublished work” titled ‘La dame à la Lionne’ (The lady with the Lioness) which the young artist received from the Salon d’Illustration in Montreal in 1990 boosted her promising career.
Her first work as an illustrator was for Richardo Keens-Douglas’s ‘The Nutmeg Princess’, a story set in the Caribbean. The artist used vibrant colors, fanciful depictions of plants and animals, and distorted perspectives. Then appeared ‘The Treasures of Trinkamalee’, set in the Middle East, for which she had done pictures. ‘Sho and the Demons of the Deep’ is a story of Japan; and ‘Mala’ is an East Indian folktale told by Gita Wolf. Most notable of these works is ‘Sho and the Demons of the Deep’, originally published as ‘Sho et les dragons d’eau’. This book addressed to youth provided Galouchko with international acclaim.
The recent projects and publications to which Galouchko contributed both as an illustrator and author include ‘Diables!’, ‘The Walking Stick’, ‘The Birdman’, ‘The Old Woman in a Shoe’ for a Children Television Workshop in the United States, and many others.
The work of Annouchka Gravel Galouchko extends beyond the simple illustrations and paintings. In collaboration with her companion, Stéphan Daigle, and artists from different countries, she also organizes a great number of cultural parades, conferences, and events that gather visual, plastic arts, music, and choreography. Such projects include the program ‘Je Suis…’ (I am…) started in 2010 at Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec, Canada or 2013 exhibition ‘Le Corps Habité’ (The Living Body).

Quotations:
"Kids are so open-minded and enthusiastic. I feel something special towards each one of them."
"It is important to follow your dreams. Never limit your possibilities or judge yourself. And always express yourself from the inside out."
"It is my deepest hope that my tales and illustrations, through their symbolic and artistic content, touch the hearts of adults as much as the those of children. opportunities for self-revelation whilst in pursuit of harmony is what I devote myself to offer through my illustrations and my compositions. art is food for the soul. It is an accessible and powerful medium that offers some understanding of the sometimes painstaking voyages that weave our existence. In the face of our unbounded ignorance, the mirror of creation can gently guide our voyage toward the more often that not overwhelming unknown."
