Background

Mclaurin, Anselm Joseph was born on March 26, 1848 in Brandon, Mississippi, United States. Son of Lauchlin and Ellen (Tullus) M.

Education

Reared on farm in Smith Company, Mississippi. Educated neighborhood schools, and at age of 16 attended Summerville Institute a half session. Entered C.S.A., August 1864.

At close of war re-entered Summerville Institute, remaining to finish in junior class.

Career

Admitted to Mississippi bar, July 1868, locating at Raleigh. Elected district attorney, November 1871. Moved to Brandon, 1876.

Elected to legislature, 1879. Presidential elector, 1888. Member Constitutional Convention, 1890.

Elected United States senator, February 7, 1894, for unexpired term, ending March 4, 1895. Elected governor Mississippi, 1896-1900. United States senator from Mississippi, 1901-1913.
