(This book represents a mental construct of salvation. It ...)
This book represents a mental construct of salvation. It portrays the individual way in which a person saves the psyche. Fifth Season is an amalgamation of losses transformed into a state of serenity for the individual. The fifth season is that imaginary place where time becomes less relevant, where the poet attempts to make sense of the tangible world around him. The fifth season represents a unique path, one which may not be traveled twice. It is the imaginary construct of a season of hope.

(This book describes a world of isolation and beauty, art ...)
This book describes a world of isolation and beauty, art and prophecy, loss and yearning. In his tender yet terrible reading of the human condition, Anthony Butts has become a poet of pain and sorrow and, finally, of the barest budding of hope.

(This book offers a blend of the mythic and the religious ...)
This book offers a blend of the mythic and the religious as award-winning poet Anthony Butts records his search for meaning and understanding in everyday life. In this profound volume, Butts observes the relationships around him, including those of families and larger communities, to give a fittingly down-to-earth interpretation of the golden rule. The Golden Underground continues Butts's tradition of presenting spiritual ideas to the forefront of American letters with classicism and complexity.

His books of poetry include "Fifth Season" (1997), "Evolution" (1998), "Little Low Heaven" (2003), "Male Hysteria". "Fifth Season" is divided into three main parts: "Detroit, City of Straits", "Writing the Body", and "Imaginary Gods". While the first section deals with Butts' childhood struggles, the second segment reflects on violent and dark images in urban settings. The last part of the book explores the present day through references to classical mythology. Butts further explores the theme of isolation in the modern world as well as finding beauty in the everyday details in his most recent book of poems, "Little Low Heaven". With his depictions of humans as machines separated from their emotions and unable to build human relationships, the poet illustrates alienation in a postmodern industrial society.
