He joined the Australian Labor Party in 1995 and became the State Secretary in 2008. He served in this position until 2014 when he resigned to take up the position of State Campaign Director for the Australian Labor Party"s Queensland Branch. In 2015, Chisholm was successful in securing the Labor Party nomination to replace retiring Queensland Senator Joe Ludwig.
