Educated at Roma Marist School and Qualified as a teacher in 1937.
While teaching at St Theresa’s Seminary, St Patrick’s, Eagle’s Peak, and Boma College—he spent his spare time continuing his studies by correspondence course. In July 1948 he went to South Africa to teach, then Ladybrand and later St Lewis High School, Natal, where in 1951 he completed his private studies In 1955 he was promoted headmaster of High School, Durban. He returned home in 1958 and went back to leach at Roma.
Although he joined the Basutoland National Party he did not become committed until 1965, when abandoned teaching on winning the seat in the Maseru district at the general election. He was appointed Minister of Education in Chief first government.
Expansion school building and teachers’ training programmes were among his first priorities. He gained popularity by bringing teachers’ pay in line with civil servants’ salaries.
He likes travelling and has represented Lesotho abroad on many occasions in America, Europe and Africa. In the cabinet reshuffle in February 1970 he became Minister of Works and Communications. Although no cabinet posts were offered in July 1972 to opposition members in the “reconciliation reshuffle” he maintained his position as a leading hawk against any concessions to their political rivals. He resigned on July 24, two days before the new cabinet was announced.
