He went on to attend the University of Oklahoma, and then the University of Oklahoma College of Law. He was an attorney, and served in Oklahoma"s National Guard before his entry into politics. While in the Senate, Sykes has voted to repeal the state"s income tax, restrict abortions, and require identification to vote in elections.
He co-authored an amendment to the state"s constitution that prohibited the consideration of Sharia law in judicial decisions.

In the Senate he serves as the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and is a member of the Rules, Public Safety, Appropriations, and Agricultural and Rural Development Committees. He is also a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government and Transportation.
