Antoine Dakoure was born on November 26, 1936, at Tampoui near Ouagadougou.
Educated first at a local seminary, then in St Louis, Senegal, he went to officers’ school in France from 1960 to 1962, then specialising in engineering for another two years.
He returned to Ouagadougou to be put in charge of the instruction and formation of cadres and, from March to December 1965, he was head of the military cabinet of President Yameogo. After the coming to power of the army he was Secretary of State for Information, Youth and Sports, for fifteen months, before becoming Minister of Agriculture and Stockbreeding, Waters, Forests and Tourism. He was reallocated this portfolio in the government of Gerard Ouedraogo in January 1971.
One of the key military officers in the Voltaic government, he has the reputation of both intelligent appraisal and doing his homework. Was one of the few who continued from the military government of 1966-70 to the quasi-civilian government of 1971 onwards. A figure to be watched in any future shake-up, he has taken genuine pride in the record of the military in politics in his country and has been known to express his concern lest the civilians undo the good work.
