(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Count Anton Alexander von Auersperg was born at Laibach, Carniola, Apr. 11, 1806.
Auersperg studied law and philosophy at the universities of Graz and Vienna, after which he traveled in Italy, France, England, and Germany.
In 1848 he was elected to the German Vor-Parlament, and later represented Laibach in the National Assembly, though he took no conspicuous part in the proceedings. After the violent deaths of two fellow members at Frankfurt, Sept. 18, 1848, he retired from public life, although he later sat in the House of Lords. In 1830 under his nom de plume he published Blätter der Liebe ("Leaves of Love"), a volume of poems, and Der Letzte Ritter ("The Last Knight"), a ballad-cycle based upon the life of Emperor Maximilian I (1459 - 1519). Distinctly a political--even a national--poem, it traced the origin and development of liberal monarchy. Pleading for civic liberties, it expressed love of "Old Austria" and resentment against the reactionary policies of her 19th-century rulers. Anastatius Grün immediately won wide celebrity. His fame increased with the appearance in 1831 of Saunterings of a Vienna Poet, a collection of thirty patriotic poems, which demanded a constitutional monarchy. His later works include Schutt ("Ruins"), Gedichte ("Poems"), Nibelungen im Frack ("Nibelungen in Evening Clothes"), and Pfaff vom Kahlenberg ("Priest of Bare Mountain"). None of his other poetry compares with his political verse. Grün, Georg Herwegh, and Ferdinand form the lyric triumvirate of the German Revolution of 1848-1849. He died at Graz on Sept. 12, 1876.

Auersperg was regarded as the leader of the liberal party in Austria.
An aristocrat, not a republican, Auersperg favored paternal monarchy, justice, and equal opportunity for all.
