Antonio Calderara was born in Abbiategrasso, Italy, on October 28, 1903.
First Antonio Calderara studied engineering. After his graduation from the Polytechnic Institute in Milan (current Polytechnic University of Milan) in 1925, he decided to devote himself entirely to painting. He was tutored for a time by Lucio Fontana.
Creating his impressionist portraits, landscapes and still lifes, Calderara mainly painted the scenes, people and objects of his native Italy. In 1923 his first exhibition was held in Vacciago and in 1929 the first collective exhibition, organized by the Artistic Family of Milan. From 1930 to 1950, the artist experimented with his art, trying new ways of expression.
In 1934 he settled near Lake Orta in Vacciago, and where he would work for most of his life. This place became his favorite subject. For example, such works as "La finestra" (1935) and "La chiesa di S. Antonio di Vacciago" (1937) were created there. Later, in 1957-1958, Antonio Calderara started to move away from figurative painting to accept a more geometric approach.
Between 1963 and 1966 Antonio Calderara worked on the series "Attrazione in tensione" and in 1969 "Orizonti". Later in life, and with weak health, Calderara began to focus on watercolours, a medium that perfectly captured the subtleties of transparency, washed with an equal, uniform treatment.
His solo exhibitions included the following: Kunstmuseum Lucerne, Switzerland; and Museo d'Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1965); Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam, Netherlands (1968); Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland (1969); Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, Germany (1973); ICA, London, United Kingdom (1974).
Calderara's work was included in the Venice Biennale in 1948 and 1956 and Documents 4 in Kassel, Germany in 1968. Antonio Calderara continued to work up and painted new artworks until his death in 1978.
