(Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary...)
Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary thing about the past worth remembering, and that was the fact that it is past and can't be restored." Well, over recent years, The British Library, working with Microsoft has embarked on an ambitious programme to digitise its collection of 19th century books. There are now 65,000 titles available (that's an incredible 25 million pages) of material ranging from works by famous names such as Dickens, Trollope and Hardy as well as many forgotten literary gems , all of which can now be printed on demand and purchased right here on Amazon. Further information on The British Library and its digitisation programme can be found on The British Library website.

Quality assurance was conducted on each of these books in an attempt to remove books with imperfections introduced by the digitization process. Though we have made best efforts - the books may have occasional errors that do not impede the reading experience. We believe this work is culturally important and have elected to bring the book back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide. Not illustrated. 1879 edition. Excerpt: ... III. Statistics of the Sacred College of Cardinals in the autumn of 1877.--Divisions in the College.--Circumstances that influenced the proceedings of the Conclave of 1878,--Reasons for inquiring into the causes that led to its result. Even before the death of Riario Sforza, however, that policy which seemed to aim at the exercise of absolute control over the cardinals by limiting their number to those already in existence, whose mind was pretty well known, and avoiding the creation of new ones on whose submissive disposition one could not equally rely, seemed to have been abandoned, and in the space of about two years, between V875 and 1877, the Pope, passing from a long period of barrenness to one of very active gestation, filled the thinned ranks of the Sacred College by the creation of thirty-five new members; and although death had in the interval been busy both among the former and the latter nominations, removing seventeen of the old ones, the Pope's activity kept pace with the mortality with such good effect as to raise the muster of those living in the autumn of 1877 to sixty-two; and there were to the last, perhaps, candidates enough still hidden in the Pontifical breast to fill up the normal number of seventy, which in latter ages was never exceeded. Of the forty-five cardinals living in 1872, only thirteen were foreigners; of the sixty-two existing, the foreigners five years later were twentysix. The Italian Cardinals, who at the former date were more than two to one, were at the latter epoch thirty-five, only exceeding by ten the number of their Transalpine brethren. The Italians, who formerly were always sufficiently numerous to make up the majority of two-thirds necessary for the Papal election, and might, therefore,...

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

correspondent translator writer author combatant
Antonio Carlo Napoleone Gallenga was born at Parma on the 4th of November, 1810. He was the eldest son of a Piedmontese of good family, who served for ten years in the French army under Massena and Napoleon.
He had finished his education at the university of Parma, when the French Revolution of 1830 caused a ferment in Italy.
When the French Revolution of 1830 caused a ferment in Italy, He sympathized with the movement, and within a few months was successively a conspirator, a state prisoner, a combatant and a fugitive. For the next five years he lived a wandering life in France, Spain and Africa. In August, 1836, he embarked for New York, and three years later he proceeded to England, where he supported himself as a translator and teacher of languages. His first book, Italy: General Views of its History and Literature, which was published in 1841, was well received, but was not successful financially. On the outbreak of the Italian revolution in 1848 he at once put himself in communication with the insurgents. He filled the post of Charge d'Affaires for Piedmont at Frankfurt in 1848-1849, and for the next few years he travelled incessantly between Italy and England, working for the liberation of his country. In 1854, through Cavour's influence, he was elected a deputy to the Italian parliament.
He retained his seat until 1864, passing the summer in England and fulfilling his parliamentary duties at Turin in the winter. On the outbreak of the Austro-French War of 1859 he proceeded to Lombardy as war correspondent of The Times. The campaign was so brief that the fighting was over before he arrived, but his connexion with The Times endured for twenty years.
He materially helped to establish that friendly feeling towards Italy which became traditional in England.
In 1859 Gallenga purchased the Falls, at Llandogo on the Wye, as a residence, and thither he retired in 1885.
