Education
Ishida became a Christian at an early age and by the time he was 19 was appointed pastor. He and Sebastian Kimura were much admired for their oratory and character.
Career
Antonio Ishida worked hard as a missionary in Kyushu and Chugoku areas for 20 years in the teeth of oppression in which he was imprisoned several times. Later was arrested by Magistrate Uneme Takenaka and thrown into the Omura Prison, where he was prevailed upon to renounce Christianity, but in vain (1630). The following year he along with Bartholomew Gutierres and four other missionaries including two foreign women were confined in a crater atop Mt. Onsendake for 30 days, but yet they would not yield (1631). At the end of their patience the magistrate ordered all of them to be burned at the stake in Nagasaki (1632).
